What does it take to make the world's most powerful portable USB-C hub?

With so many portable USB-C hubs available on the market today, we knew that if we wanted to create the best hub possible, we'd need to pack a whole lot of high-end specs into a stylish, compact package. Today we take a look behind the scenes at Moshi HQ to learn just how we were able to create the world's most powerful portable hub solution.

Specs

Of course when it comes to a USB-C hub, most consumers are going to be concerned with having the best possible specs. In order to stand out from the crowd, we knew it was essential to offer specs that even the most demanding users would be happy with. With display output and power supply being the two most sought-after, we set ourselves the challenge of implementing video output and power capabilities unmatched by any other portable USB-C hub:

  • HDMI 2.0 4K HDR/60 Hz — Ultra-high resolution video is vital for digital and creative professionals who need smooth graphics, clear images, and vivid colors. Plus for those working long days in front of the screen, the 60 Hz refresh rate reduces eye strain and fatigue.
  • 70 W PD pass-through — Enough juice to power and charge most high-performance laptops even under the most intense workloads.

Engineering

Our next challenge was how to cram all of these top-end specs into a device compact enough to slip into a pocket or laptop bag. Rather than make do with a mid-range all-in-one chipset, we sourced individual chips for each output, working with our suppliers to find newer chipsets with higher specifications than the average portable USB-C hub.

Next, in order to maximize USB-C charging pass-through, we used intricate soldering to marry the cable to the circuit board, and redesigned the internal power supply components to minimize loss and resistance. The result is one of the highest pass-through wattages of any portable USB-C hub available today.

As with most multi-port adapters, the Ethernet port was the thickest of the lot, meaning the entire device needed to be unnecessarily thick just to accommodate this one component. To solve this problem, our design team utilized a collapsible Ethernet port design with a smaller footprint when not in use, but still allowing standard cables to be connected when needed.

Finally, a stray USB-C connector cable can not only increase device size, but also result in damages and tangles on a desk or in a bag. To prevent such inconveniences, we drew on our experience in magnetic design from our SnapTo™ mounting system to design a cable management system that allows the connector to fold away neatly within the hub itself, held securely in place by magnets to ensure hassle-free transportation and storage.
