How Moshi created the ultimate wireless charger

When we set out to create the Q Collection, we wanted to make the best looking, best performing wireless chargers available on the market. With so many choices out there, we knew that we really needed to develop solutions which not only stand head and shoulders above the crowd, but also represent what Moshi stands for as a brand; design-centric, functional, and built to last. Here's the story of how we created the best wireless charger possible with our Q Collection.

Q-coil™ - The heart of Q Collection

At the literal heart of every Moshi Q Collection charger is our Q-coil™ module, which was designed from scratch to deliver the best possible wireless charging experience. Two of the most common complaints about wireless chargers are the difficulty of positioning devices accurately on the charging surface and slow charging speeds compared to the claims made by the manufacturer. We undertook rigorous research and testing of many different designs and materials to find the best possible combination, concluding on these three major aspects which combine to maximize charging efficiency and effectiveness:

Quality components

A wireless charger is only as good as the components inside. We discovered that many low cost solutions use inferior internal components which adversely affect performance and efficiency. Starting with the charging coil, we sourced high-purity copper to minimize energy loss during charging, and under it placed a high-density ferrite sheet.

Copper coil - Using copper with a purity of above 99% enabled us to create a more efficient charging coil which minimized power loss during charging.

Ferrite sheet - Nestled below the copper coil is a high-density ferrite sheet which not only reduces energy loss, but also helps to reflect energy upwards towards the charging pad, resulting in a larger effective charging area which does not require pinpoint positioning of the receiver device for charging.

Efficient heat dissipation

Wireless charging is an inherently inefficient form of power transfer, and like any form of battery charging can result in excess heat buildup which can cause slow charging or even damage to batteries and other components. As there will always be some power lost in the process of converting electricity to electromagnetic fields and back again, minimizing this power loss can help to reduce overall power consumption as well as prevent the buildup of excess heat. During our development process we found the key to maximizing efficiency was in using pure, high-quality materials for Q-coil™ construction.

Convenient positioning

One of the main frustrations many people have with wireless charging is the need to position their phone precisely over the charging coil for effective charging, with numerous reports of even the slightest movement or misplacement resulting in failure to charge and a dead battery when they were expecting a full charge. This effectively eliminates the key advantage of wireless charging compared to cables: simplicity and convenience. Our 99% pure copper coil already enlarges the effective charging area, but we also added a high-density ferrite sheet below the coil to reflect as much energy as possible upwards towards the receiver device. The overall result is a larger effective charging area, reducing the need for perfect positioning and a delivering a reliable charge every time.

Standing out, blending in

Of course the most important aspect of a wireless charger is its ability to keep your phone and other personal electronics charged up, but we didn't want our Q Collection to look like just another piece of boring plastic tech. As a design-centric purveyor of lifestyle goods, an attractive, elegant design was just as important to us as functionality in order for Moshi Q Collection wireless chargers to stand out from the plethora of low-cost, cookie-cutter solutions available in the market.

In order to help our customers to fully embrace wireless charging, we designed the Q Collection to complement the places where they'd most benefit from the convenience—bedrooms, living rooms, offices, and the like. With minimalism being one of Moshi's core values, we took cues from Scandinavian furniture design when creating the Q Collection, employing clean lines, simple colors, and soft materials to come up with an elegant exterior which blends effortlessly into any room or workspace. The external fabric covering was carefully selected by our team of designers for not only its clean aesthetic look but also its soft and unimposing texture which easily matches many styles of interior design without being too obtrusive or attention-grabbing.

Testing and quality control
